The story behind Scuba
The Little Spider with Flippers Who Waited 35 Years
Scubaspider’s story began more than 35 years ago. As a child, the writer spotted a little spider in the sink and got scared. She ran water over it in a panic, and it disappeared down the drain. She felt sorry for the little spider, so she drew it and gave it eight flippers, a snorkel and a diving mask for its journey. In the drawing, the spider no longer simply fell down the drain: it could swim with the current and survive.
The drawing stayed in a drawer, but over the years she often thought about the little spider with flippers. Slowly, Scuba’s adventure grew and the story deepened.
For decades, Scuba kept knocking from inside the drawer, waiting for a chance to tell his story. Publishing the eight-book series she envisioned seemed like an impossible dream for a long time. Then the world changed. Digital tools and AI-assisted illustration finally made it possible to bring Scuba’s story and wonderful world to life.
The Scubaspider book series was created by Anna Ylinen. She designed the characters and their world. The illustrations were created and refined based on her detailed plans and character designs.
This book series is a reminder that sometimes dreams just need a little more time to come true.

Scuba is a small spider with a kind heart, a curious mind and a gift for finding wonder in unexpected places.
Scuba looks at the world with an open mind. He isn’t fearless — but even when he feels afraid, curiosity helps him take one more step forward.
When an unexpected whirlpool carries Scuba far from home, he finds himself in a vast network of hidden waterways. Together with new friends, he begins a journey filled with unexpected discoveries and new adventures.

A friend in the flow of water
Meet Drip
Drip knows the underground waterways by feeling how the water moves.
Formed from flowing water, soft mist and a little bit of mystery, he appears when Scuba needs a friend. Deep beneath the ground, he listens to the currents and follows the paths they reveal.
Drip has heard stories from the old currents. They say every stream eventually reaches the ocean. He has never seen it, but he believes their stories.
When Scuba sets out to find the ocean, Drip chooses to go with him.
A little light with a curious heart
Meet Glim
Glim has always been curious about the places beyond the next tunnel.
She moves quickly from one idea to another, and when something catches her interest, her light seems to shine a little brighter. Glim has never heard of the ocean until Scuba describes it. Yet something in Scuba’s words sounds familiar.
Certain that she may be able to help, Glim joins Scuba and Drip on their journey.
She brings her light, her ideas and a wholehearted wish to see where the search will lead them.
